Chemical Oxygen Demand

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is a vital test for assessing the quality of effluents and waste waters prior to discharge.  The COD test predicts the oxygen requirement of the effluent and is used for the monitoring and control of discharges, and for assessing treatment plant performance.

The standard test for COD involves digesting the sample with strong sulphuric acid solution in the presence of chromium and silver salts.  These potentially hazardous chemicals clearly need to be handled with extreme care.  Recent health and safety concerns have made it necessary to find a means of carrying out the vitally important test while at the same time minimizing the risk to laboratory staff.

The Palintest COD Tubetests system offers a method which is both practical and convenient.  The reagents are supplied premixed and predispensed into borosilicate glass test tubes, which reduces contact with potentially hazardous chemicals to a minimum.  The test is simply carried out by adding the sample to the the tube, closing the cap and then digesting for two hours at 15  C.  The tubes are then cooled and the test colour measured using a Photometer.

COD Tubetests are offered in four ranges up to: 150 mg/l, 400 mg/l, 2000 mg/l, and 20,000 mg/l.  Two types are available - mercury-free and with mercuric sulphate.

The reagent formulations are based on those specified in recognized international standard methods and meet the requirements of conformity testing against national and international standards.

The mercury-free formulations is recommended for general use.  The formulation with mercuric sulphate is provided for use in standard procedures which require the suppression of interference due to high levels of chloride.

PT 591 COD Laboratory Set

The Cod Laboratory Set is the ideal way to get stared for this new dimension in COD testing.  The set contains all the hardware required to carry out COD tests quickly and efficiently - COD Tubetests heater with built in safety system, test tube rack, photometer adaptor and micropipettor.  The set does not contain COD reagents or photometer.  The COD Tubetests heater is a dedicated dry-block heater which allows up to 12 tubes to be digested at the same time.  Temperature fluctuation is controlled by the use of a platinum sensor controller.  The heater has a metal case construction and is fitted with an illuminated ON/OFF switch and heater indicator lamp.  Available in 220/240 v 50 Hz and 110/120v 60 Hz version (please specify).

The Safety Screen is a high impact polycarbonate screen which completely encloses the sides of the heater for maximum safety.

The Tubetests Heater (PT 592), Thermometer (PT 689), Test Tube Rack (PT 588), Photometer Adaptor (PT 586) and Micropipettor (PT 572) are all available separately for use with existing equipment.

The Tubetests tubes are used in a special multi-tube black heater which offers significant advantages in space saving and power consumption compared with the traditional method.  Most importantly, Tubetests are intergrated with the photometer system so as to provide a complete system for COD measurement.
